RESEARCH AGENDA

Technology changes.
Institutions must adapt.

My research examines how states and armed forces respond to technological and strategic change, and why their paths of adaptation differ.

future warfare

Military AICommand & controlResponsible innovation

How does AI change the relationship between political purpose and military action?

My work examines the opportunities and limits of military AI: how it is adopted, how it changes command and decision-making, and how armed forces retain human judgement and strategic control. The focus extends from operational concepts to the institutions responsible for developing and governing these capabilities.

Defence institutionsForce developmentSmall states

Why do some militaries adapt more effectively than others?

I use comparative frameworks to study the drivers, enablers, and constraints of military innovation. This includes the interaction of organisational culture, defence industries, acquisition, doctrine, and operational learning across both major powers and small states.

What can European and Indo-Pacific states learn from each other?

My research connects the security challenges of Europe and the Indo-Pacific, drawing on work on Singapore, South Korea, China, and other regional actors. It considers how technological competition, alliances, and defence planning affect the choices available to states.
